Murray Warns Kyrgios After Easy SW19 Win
Nick Kyrgios believes his fourth-round Wimbledon clash against Andy Murray shapes as his best chance to finally beat the Brit.
Two of those matches came at Wimbledon, with Murray defeating the Frenchman in the quarter-finals in 2010 and the semi-finals two years later.
Nick Kyrgios admits he’s torn between the freedom of flying solo and the need for direction after owning up to being too soft to challenge for grand slam glory.
Murray was tormenting his opponent, though, one lob as he held serve to level things up, so teasingly played that in his bid to recover Kyrgios achieved the rare feat of knocking the ball clear out of the arena.
Murray, who did not face a break point, broke the Aussie’s rocket serve again to go 3-1 up in the second set and the No 15 seed’s wild slashed forehand almost hit the back wall along with the towel.
“To be honest, I woke up this morning and played computer games”, Kyrgios said.
Kyrgios faces Murray after beating Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the third round yesterday on People’s Sunday – the first for 12 years.
Murray seized the opportunity and quickly produced another break to easily take the second set against Kyrgios, who, due to the weather, was on court for the fourth successive day.
“He has to get a coach and people around him who are just not yes-men”, he said.
Kyrgios knows he needs to do better but appears unsure how to go about it.
“I mean, I know that I have the talent to do good things. Steve has picked up a lot of confidence in the last few weeks and he has a nice game for grass but I think I mixed it up well”. Is that the greatest preparation?
The Aussie played his second consecutive match of the tournament on No.2 Court and Kyrgios was a set down and two sets to one down against Dustin Brown but he recovered to win the match in five sets.
But from then on Nishikori failed to win a game and, after dropping serve for the third time in the set, with a double fault, he could not hide his despair. I feel like I know what to do but it’s hard to actually go out there and execute against such a player like him.
This is the final match scheduled on Centre Court and the victor of this match will face 7th seed Richard Gasquet or 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.
“I see him at times more than I see my family, so it’s good to have a friend like him”.
“It was a good first set”, mused Kyrgios. He s a great guy, a great player and I m really looking forward to it.
“I definitely have the tools to do it, but saying that, he s probably one of the best players in the world and he s probably the favourite at the moment since Novak is out”, the Australian said.
“I would never have thought I would win the first four rounds in straight sets”, he said. I obviously like playing the game. I don’t say anything.
“I’ve got experience, but it ultimately comes down to just laying it all out there and competing for a long time”.
