Wimbledon 2016: Novak Djokovic stunned by Sam Querrey
A third-round knock-out blow that improved the prospects of everyone else in the draw, whether they might admit it or not, was inflicted by big-serving Sam Querrey of the USA on Court One. But it would have been even crazier early last week-like asking whether pizza would taste better after you put it in a blender. He lost just two points on his first serve in the entire match against the Frenchman, who had won their two previous meetings.
“It was a good first set”. He won his next match.
The leading men’s singles player and defending Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, has racked up his 30th consecutive Grand Slam win.
Cilic ended up winning his first major title at that tournament in NY.
The 18th-seeded Cibulkova reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals once before, in 2011.
Ultimately, Querrey’s serve, which had rescued him so many times on break point down, did the damage in the tie-breaker as Novak looked unusually tight. He threw down 31 aces, survived four rain delays and dismissed Djokovic in four sets.
Radwanska, a finalist at the All England Club in 2012, has struggled at this year’s tournament. “I’m still here and I’m playing my match tomorrow”. What I say on the court, whether it’s smashing my racquets.it’s in the heat of the moment.
The high did not set Querrey up for an ugly crash.
The Scot was inevitably briefly distracted by the commotion surrounding nearby goings-on, but regained his focus to beat Australian John Millman 6-3 7-5 6-2.
Murray, however, has beaten Tsonga in 11 of their last 12 matches, including four times on grass.
“It doesn’t”, Murray said, “because if I was to reach the final, then it may have some bearing really, but it doesn’t right now”.
At 29 years of age, Djokovic’s best tennis might be behind him. Andy Roddick was the last one to win a major, at the 2003 U.S. Open. Djokovic has simply dominated the men’s tennis scene.
The one who appears to have the biggest upside potential is another lanky Californian, 18-year-old Taylor Fritz. Federer is chasing a record eighth Wimbledon singles title.
Querrey is still longer than a long shot at Wimbledon.
To reach the semifinals, Querrey will need to get past No. 6 seeded Milos Raonic of Canada. Raonic found himself on thin ice against David Goffin in the fourth round, but the Canadian stormed back from two sets down for a 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
The No. 3-seeded Federer hadn’t played since Friday, when he was the only man to finish a third-round match.
“He said, ‘Sorry, ‘” Kyrgios said.
Murray, the second seed, will also face a tough matchup against No. 15 seed Nick Kyrgios. He has reached the final of both major tournaments this year, and lost to Djokovic both times.
But after quickly taking the third set upon the resumption of play on Saturday, Djokovic was unable to force a decider despite serving for the fourth set at 5-4. On No. 1 Court, No. 10 Tomas Berdych was playing No. 32 Lucas Pouille. Querrey has never made it past the fourth round in a Grand Slam event. So is Querrey the answer to our - or, perhaps more pointedly, USTA’s - prayers? He sounds willing. Maybe he has a not-so-crazy-after-all shot to keep winning. “He fought and he tried and he hustled, so yes, I do think he did very well”. “Hopefully will just kind of play freely and have fun and play big and hopefully get another win”.
