“Hamilton”: New Leads Announced for Later This Summer
The part of Aaron Burr will be played by Brandon Victor Dixon starting in mid-August, and the role of Eliza Hamilton will be played by Lexie Lawson starting July 11. Luwoye and Muñoz will begin their performances on July 11th, after creator Lin-Manuel Miranda steps down from the role.
Micahel Luwoye will play Alexander Hamilton once a week when Javier Munoz is off.
The 34-year old actor was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and is a graduate of St. Albans School and Columbia University. His other Broadway credits include Motown the Musical and The Scottsboro Boys which he also starred in in London, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.
Dixon is now on Broadway playing Eubie Blake in “Shuffle Along”, a role that earned him a featured actor Tony nod. As a producer, he won a 2014 Tony for best revival of a musical, for his company Raise the Roof’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”. Meanwhile, Lexi Lawson is set to board the Broadway cast on July 11 in the role of Eliza Hamilton. “I will never forget all of you”.
He’s later joined by Leslie Odom, Jr., and Phillipa Soo, who are both leaving Hamilton at the end of the week, as they come together for a rendition of “Happy Trails”. Despite strong box office, that production last month announced an abrupt closing date of July 24, the same day Audra McDonald is scheduled to depart the show on maternity leave.
