Corker takes himself out of Trump VP consideration
But unlike Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Bob Corker of Tennessee, Pence also hasn’t removed his name from consideration, giving Democrats fodder for attacks.
Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he told Trump he would be happy to serve as an informal adviser.
“I do think, when you look at Governor Pence, he’s the type of person who can help unite the party”, said Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager. It’s not clear how serious a candidates she actually may have been.
Mr. Gingrich, an old hand at Washington deal-making who is advising the Trump campaign, stumped Wednesday night with Mr. Trump in OH, which typically is a must-win state for Republicans. In modern USA history, they don’t seem to get far, he said. But she said she was open to speaking at the convention.
He still trails Clinton, whose campaign raised $40 million in June, with an additional almost $30 million raised by the Democratic committee. Ernst is going and is more than willing to speak.
But Trump’s campaign has been quiet about who he’ll pick – and when he’ll make an announcement. That included about $40 million that went directly into her campaign coffers. “The young Trumps are most impressive”.
The billionaire businessman began his quest for the White House largely by paying his own way – and disparaging his Republican competitors as beholden to big donors. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) have also emerged as potential running mates.
Corker’s exit comes a day after he campaigned with presumptive Republican nominee in North Carolina – one of several swing states. The convention starts July 18 in Cleveland.
“And I think that President Trump will need some great assistance in the United States Senate and I can provide that”, she added. “So what I visited with him about is just how great it is to get out and met with people, I do a 99-county tour so I encouraged him to get out and meet as many people as possible”, Ernst said. “There are two of them under consideration”.
It might have had something to do with his trip the day before when Corker accompanied Trump from New York City to Raleigh, N.C. His presence fueled speculation he may be considering a place on the ticket-despite dozens of serious minded Republicans foreign policy experts had refused to endorse Trump. Something tells me Gov. Pence might not be opposed to that, either.
“I will probably participate more as an advocate”, Ernst said. “But if it’s Newt, nobody is beating him in the debates”. Pence, who has gubernatorial and congressional experience, is seen as an attractive pick because of his popularity with social conservatives and establishment Republicans along with top GOP donors, including those affiliated with the Koch brothers’ influential political network.
And Corker is a serious person: as a Republican who had a less hawkish vision of US foreign policy, he had played a central role in numerous ongoing national security debates of our times.
