Shooting of ‘Mr. Phil’ shocks Minnesota school colleagues
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wrote in an Instagram message responding to the death of Philando Castile, a Minnesota resident killed during a traffic stop. She said she had taught her son growing up to always comply with a police officer’s orders.
Later in the day, at a rally in St. Paul, Valerie Castile told people at the school where her son worked that she thought people who didn’t know him would love him if they had gotten the chance to meet him. Mangseth said he was “made aware there was a livestream on Facebook” but that he had not yet seen the video and didn’t know anything about its contents.
“We want to make sure the likelihood of getting justice in this country, when you are the recipient of deadly force by an officer, is not impacted by demography or geography”. What comes next? They’ve tried the judicial system. “But just like there are a small percentage of bad politicians… preachers… teachers, there are a small percentage of bad police officers”. “He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet out his pocket and he let the officer know that he was… he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet, and the officer just shot him in his arm”, Reynolds said.
“I’m here because my longtime friend got killed by a police officer and we need justice out here”, he said.
Reynolds described the officer as Asian. The president said the shootings are symptoms of “the broader challenges within our criminal justice system”, racial disparities, and a lack of trust between law enforcement and communities they serve. Sterling was killed during an altercation with two white police officers.
William Moulder, a police consultant and longtime former police chief in Des Moines, Iowa, said all officers carry first-aid supplies in their cars and are instructed to start rendering aid as soon as it’s clear there’s no threat. A clearly distraught person who appears to be a police officer stands at the car’s window, telling the woman to keep her hands where they are and intermittently swearing.
From Warsaw, Poland, Obama also gave a speech echoing his Facebook post and expressing condolences for the families of Sterling and Castile.
The city’s website said the Saint Anthony Village police department was working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and other law enforcement agencies on an investigation. No one else was injured…. A video shot by a bystander has been widely circulated in the aftermath. She said he opened fire when Castile reached for his identification.
“You shot four bullets into him, sir”. Both videos quickly went viral. Except for this: Another black man ends up dead, this time in the front seat of his vehicle.
Saying she wanted comfort when faced with the “images of slain black bodies”, she released a raw video of herself on Instagram singing “Black Maybe”, the 1972 song by Motown singer Syreeta written by her ex-husband Stevie Wonder.
It was unclear whether other footage exists.
According to the St. Anthony Police Department, all police cars are equipped with dashboard cameras.
Castile had worked for the St. Paul school district since he was 19.
Katherine Holmquist-Burks hired Castile three years ago to supervise the cafeteria at J.J. Hill Montessori, a St. Paul magnet school with 530 students and 85 staff members.
His upbeat disposition won him the job.
He helped “create a warm, welcoming friendly environment in our cafeteria”, she said.
Holmquist-Burks said that after she heard about Castile’s death, she went to the vigil being held at the governor’s mansion.
“I don’t hate cops, there are good cops, but this thing – in front of (a) 4 year old – my God, I can’t imagine.” said Dunn, as she looked at her own daughter.
Minnesota court records online show Castile had some misdemeanor violations, mainly related to driving.
