Trump shortlists 10 potential running mates for vice president

Trump arrived in southwestern OH with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose name has been mentioned as a possible vice president on the Republican ticket. They know him. They’ve seen what he can accomplish and how bright he is.

Gingrich himself admitted Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” that he is being vetted along with four of five others. In spite of this wrinkle, the Republican nominee who says he thrives on unpredictability might, for once, take the predictable route to picking a running mate – a path, some Republicans say, that could also be the most fruitful.

All in all, it makes more sense for ambitious young Republican pols to endorse Trump and then take a long summer vacation, with perhaps an Indian-summer chaser.

Spicing the event will be a Trump introduction by Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones, who has often spoken out about illegal immigration. He was encouraging people to check Trump’s record on the Politfact.com watchdog website.

Pam Smith of Middletown also carried anti-Trump signs. Support for trade-expansion measures hasn’t been quite as obligatory in the GOP as, say, opposition to legalized abortion; for one thing, it’s always been acceptable to kvetch about the trade negotiation and enforcement efforts of Democratic administrations. “And then he repeats it, the same thing, two or three times in a row”.
