Veep prospect Pence to appear with Trump
Donald Trump’s campaign is planning a rally in the Indianapolis area following a fundraiser in the city with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence next week.
“A new candidate may or may not have a record, but still I think it would be good for Democrats and the state of IN if Pence became a vice presidential candidate with Trump, but I don’t know what that would mean for the country”, Marvel said.
“I think the Republicans will have a challenge to get another candidate to the same level of name recognition and show what they can bring to the table”.
Pence, who is now running for a second term as IN governor, is thought to be on the shortlist of candidates the presumptive GOP presidential nominee is considering for the No. 2 slot on the ticket.
Marc Lotter, Pence’s re-election campaign spokesman, referred questions about the vice presidential selection process to the Trump campaign. “Nothing’s been offered. Nothing’s been accepted”. But he insists he’s focused on Indiana. “I’m not sure having Mike Pence as your running mate is the straw that will work”. He also fulfills desires from national GOP elites: unflappable message discipline and a bridge to social conservatives and top-dollar GOP donors. Pitcock is a former Pence staffer from his congressional days and now runs his own consulting firm with IN as his only client.
Joe Etling, chair of the Democrat party in Vigo County, said “this has been a political season with one surprise after another, so nothing would surprise me” if Pence is selected as a vice presidential candidate, he said.
Gentry said if Gov. Pence is selected as a vice presidential candidate, Pence could help unify a segment of the Republican party.
For Trump, there’d also be symbolism in tapping Pence. “Indiana will keep a Republican in the governor’s seat”, Morrison said. Even after Pence endorsed Ted Cruz – praising Trump, too, while doing it – Trump crushed his rivals, knocking Cruz and then Ohio Gov. John Kasich from the race and securing his spot as the presumptive Republican nominee.
Trump told media Wednesday he is looking at a list of about 10 people, many whose names have not yet surfaced, for vice president.
“I will tell you that whether I’m running for reelection and supporting…or in any other capacity, I look forward to strongly advocating for Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States”, Pence says. Conway was hired by Trump’s campaign last week.

Early said including Pence on the national ticket fills some of the holes that Trump has been dealing with since he started the presidential campaign. However, it’s not clear that Trump needs help with those voters: As long as a convention rebellion is staved off, they’re unlikely to support Clinton in November anyway. The rally was Trump’s first campaign visit to Indiana.
And Pence says he’s honored to be considered for the position.
Leaving the event, the governor was asked if he wanted to be vice president.
His travails were largely written off in his first full year in office because of a combination of learning curve and the incredibly high bar for performance set by predecessor Mitch Daniels, who had just wrapped an exhaustive eight-year tenure at the Statehouse with speculation that he’d run for president.
Hoosiers gathered for lunch had mixed views on Pence potentially leaving the governor’s race for presidential politics.
Political pundits hail Pence as a reasonable pick because of his traditional conservatism and popularity among evangelical Christians – characteristics that could neutralize some of Trump’s perceived negatives.
“Josh Pitcock has served in a variety of different roles with me over the years when I was a member of congress”, Pence said.
