’13 Wimbledon champ Murray faces new foe in 11th Slam final
Two miscues of the sort you’re just not used to seeing from him all that often.
2nd-seeded Murray secured a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over 10th-seeded Berdych, whose display was error-laden throughout the match.
“This one clearly hurts because I felt like I could have had it. So close”, said Federer, who had his surgically repaired left knee checked by a trainer after the uncharacteristic fall and wasn’t sure whether he was seriously injured.
Federer, owner of 17 major trophies in all, was merely one point from serving for the match when, ahead two sets to one, he got to 30-40 on Raonic’s serve at 4-all in the fourth.
It will also be Murray’s first final from 11 at the majors where he hasn’t faced either Djokovic or Federer against whom he has lost eight times. Soon, he was in charge. But overall I have to say I think he played really well. I know he’s great in breakers, it was always going to be tough, but I’d have liked to see him scramble more than that. “I know what I have to do to get to the latter stages of these tournaments”.
Andy Murray will face Milos Raonic in the final as he aims for his second Wimbledon title. “At this stage of the tournament, you pay for that”. Roger Federer said he had no intention of retiring after losing to Milos Raonic in the semi-finals at Wimbledon.”I was struggling throughout the third and fourth sets, he was playing some real good tennis”.Raonic’s first win on grass against a top 10 opponent shattered Federer’s hopes of claiming a record eighth All England Club crown and 18th major. The American stars have won all 13 of their grand slam doubles finals dating back to their first success together at the French Open in 1999.Federer is trying to win a record eighth Wimbledon title, while Raonic is looking for his first.Having come through that examination Murray, the highest seeded of the semi-finalist, is the book-makers favourite for the title and has received the endorsement of several leading pundits.
But the second seed won’t underestimate Raonic who reached the final by coming from two sets to one down to defeat seven-time champion Federer.
Murray has now reached more slam finals than any other British player, surpassing the mark he jointly held with Fred Perry, and there is no doubt he will be expected to repeat his 2013 triumph, which ended Perry’s 77-year reign as the last British victor of the men’s singles title.
“There was a little opening and I took it”, said Raonic, who is the first Canadian man to make a Grand Slam final.
Federer, who turns 35 on August 8, would have been the oldest finalist at the All England Club since 1974. Besides Wimbledon in 2013, he won the 2012 U.S. Open.
Maybe this time Federer ran out of steam, forced to play 10 sets in his last two matches, including a quarterfinal comeback from two sets down against Marin Cilic on Wednesday.
In his five-set victory over Roger Federer in the semifinals, Raonic saved 8 of 9 break points. This time, Federer flinched the way he seemingly never used to.
McEnroe hailed Raonic’s all-round game.
The victor of the match will face Milos Raonic in Sunday’s final. I served a double fault twice. “Unexplainable for me, really”, Federer said. “I never take it for granted”.
Raonic packs the fastest serve of the tournament so far, sending down a 144mph (231.7km/h) ace early in the semi-final against Federer.
“I just hope with the slip I had in the fifth, I’m going to be fine tomorrow and beyond”. I walked it off. “I was able to finish”, Federer said.
