Safari Club suspends membership of Cecil hunters
Piper Hoppe, 10, from Minnetonka, Minnesota, holds a sign at the doorway of River Bluff Dental clinic in protest against the killing of a famous lion in Zimbabwe, in Bloomington, Minnesota July 29, 2015. Critics say the killing of Cecil demonstrates how the elite hunting industry is poorly policed and struggles with corruption, the Los Angeles Times reports. Some of Palmer’s patients were among the protesters.
It is now likely to remain in Zimbabwe, Bronkhorst said.
A makeshift memorial began forming outside his shuttered office while an online petition demanding justice for Cecil had drawn 95,000 signatures.
Walter James Palmer, 55, is a dentist in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington.
The post from Farrow’s official Twitter account, which has about 650, 000 followers, was deleted after some questioned her intent.
A representative for WildCRU didn’t immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
The hunter’s office and practice website has become a target for animal rights activists disgusted at the dentist’s actions.
“That’s a tough one, ” Bloom said.
Animals need to be protected.
A Zimbabwean judge has granted bail to the professional hunter arrested for helping an American tourist illegally kill a protected lion. The article said Dr Palmer had a reputation for being capable of “skewering a playing card from 100 yards” with a compound bow and having “a purist’s reputation for his disinclination to carry firearms as back-up”.
The statement made no mention of Palmer, but said that Bronkhorst’s son Zane was also wanted for questioning.
Theo Bronkhorst, a professional hunter with Bushman Safaris, attended the court in Hwange – about 375 miles west of the capital Harare – along with owner of the land that borders the park, Honest Trymore Ndlovu.
“They hunted some of their own species to extinction and they have really taken on this agenda and they are going to be chairing a conference in 2016 just as we chaired the conference last year, which Prince Charles played a big role in”.
US Congresswoman Betty McCollum, a Minnesota Democrat, has asked prosecutors and the US Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate whether any US laws were violated in the lion’s killing. Palmer reportedly paid $50,000 to track and kill a black-maned lion, just outside Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. Charity Charamba, a Zimbabwe police spokeswoman, said police were seeking Palmer, “who might be an American or a Spaniard”. According to charges, the lion was not on the list to be killed. Such a move could limit the importation of African lion carcasses into the United States from some countries.
One of the strongest denunciations came from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which said Palmer should hang for killing Cecil. He said Palmer’s domestic records could be jeopardized if he’s found to have done something illegal overseas.
Palmer was with professional guides when he killed a beloved lion in Africa.
“I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt”, Palmer said in a written statement.
Animal advocates all over the world had been rallying in social media over the death of Cecil the Lion on July 1.
