Protests against police shooting to resume in Baton Rouge
At least one man was walked away by police.
The most recent shooting deaths by police come after several years of contentious killings by law enforcement officers, including that of Michael Brown, a teenager whose death in the summer of 2014 caused riots and weeks of protests in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson.
A few hundred protesters briefly faced off against police in riot gear outside the police department.
The protest was tense earlier as police in riot gear came out, apparently to clear the road so traffic could pass through. They planned to move to Baton Rouge Police Headquarter afterwards, then to the Mayor’s house.
Those safety concerns were also on the mind of Baton Rouge resident Eugene Collins, also at the convenience store.
Pointing to the crowds shouting along a fence surrounding the police department she said: “To me, this is just a snapshot of north Baton Rouge and how frustrated they are”.
Protesters waved homemade signs while drivers honked their support and some stopped by with bottles of water.
Some wore T-shirts that read, “I can’t keep calm I have a black son” or “Black Lives Matter”.
Lael Montgomery of Baton Rouge said he came out to protest racism in the community. We don’t want young people getting arrested.
“After the Dallas murder of five officers at a protest the night before officers are very cautious and on the lookout for any threat”, Duhnam’s statement said.
About 30 people were arrested Friday night during a rally for Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, according to reports from The Advocate. Others waited for a scheduled evening march starting at City Hall.
Protests resumed in Baton Rouge on Saturday, four days after Alton Sterling was fatally shot by two police officers outside a convenience store.

More demonstrations were expected Saturday afternoon. Tempers flared on Friday night in Baton Rouge when hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the Baton Rouge Police Department, demonstrating against the shooting.
The counts for which the people face and the identities of those arrested were not made available by Baton Rouge police, and officials at the Parish Prison and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to queries.
