One winning ticket sold in $540 million Mega Millions drawing
After a handful of unsuccessful drawings last week, the jackpot soared from $449 million to a whopping $540 million, amping up lottery fever around the nation.
One lucky person won the $540 million Mega Millions jackpot on Friday night. As of midday Saturday, it had not been claimed.
It was the only jackpot winning ticket sold. That person has not yet been identified, either.
The jackpot is the seventh-largest prize in USA lottery history.
Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty told The Associated Press the winning ticket was sold in Indiana.
The current prize is the game’s biggest since December 2013, when holders of two tickets sold in California and Georgia shared a $648 million jackpot.
This is the third top-10 jackpot so far in 2016. The victor can take payment of the estimated $540 million as a 30-year annuity or in a one-time lump sum estimated of $380 million, both before taxes. Each of those tickets are worth $1 million. “Three included the optional Megaplier, so their tickets are worth $2 million each – sold in Colorado, Florida and Kansas”, the official Mega Millions website confirms.
The Mega Millions game is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. Virgin Islands.
