Bernie Sanders confirms Clinton endorsement talks
Sanders, who has not yet ended his presidential campaign, has sought a health care commitment from Clinton to allow those who are aged 55 and older to opt into Medicare.
While several media outlets have reported that Bernie Sanders is expected to formally endorse Hillary Clinton as early as Tuesday, the Vermont senator’s supporters remain skeptical about voting for a candidate who they feel represents the status quo, against which they have fought so hard throughout the primary process.
The Pew poll shows 85 percent of Sanders backers will support Clinton, while just 9 percent say they’ll back Donald Trump.
Dickinson says it’s not clear how enthusiastically Sanders will endorse Clinton because some of his supporters might be disappointed if Sanders embraces a political culture that he strongly criticized during his year long campaign.
He appeared at a moment when many Democrats have run out of patience with Sanders, who is holding out for various items in the party platform.
Sanders met with House Democrats Wednesday during which he was reportedly booed for failing to endorse Clinton.
Sanders has been seeking policy concessions from Clinton on college tuition – which happened Wednesday, as Clinton rolled out a proposal to make tuition free at in-state public colleges and universities for those earning less than $125,000 per year for a family of four. While Clinton clearly has work to do to convince Sanders voters to vote for her instead of simply voting against Trump (72 percent of Clinton primary voters say their vote is more for Clinton than against Trump, while 37 percent of Sanders primary voters say the same), the common enemy in Trump is enough to ensure that these voters are unlikely to go away.
Although Sanders has promised to vote for Clinton in the general election, he has not endorsed her or campaigned on her behalf. The discussions included a dinner between Mr. Mook and Mr. Weaver in Burlington, Vt., where Mr. Sanders has his campaign headquarters.
Obama first released that he would be returning to the state before word later leaked out that Clinton would be joining him not only at the campaign rally, but on a campaign bus ride lasting more than an hour-and-a-half.
Sanders supporters who gathered on the night of California’s June 7 primary election were enthusiastic for their candidate, with one telling Breitbart News that she hopes to see her pick push through for a contested convention.
Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs would not confirm reports of a scheduled endorsement, telling USA TODAY: “We are continuing to have conversations with Secretary Clinton’s campaign and look forward to reaching a result that everybody’s happy with. Sen”.
Still, Sanders is agitating for more at Democratic National Convention’s full platform committee meeting in Orlando. After the Orlando meeting, the document will be voted on at the convention in Philadelphia this month.
“I had the impression that we live in a democratic society”, Sanders said, adding that while he respects the president “he’s not right all of the time”. “I know Tim; Tim is a very decent guy”, Sanders said. Still, Clinton will have more delegates in attendance.
