Heat officially sighn three free agents including Wayne Ellington
Johnson was one of the best 3-point shooters on the roster a year ago, converting 38% of his long range shots. The Heat had until today to decide whether to match the contract of Johnson.
The Miami Heat have chose to match the Brooklyn Nets’ offer sheet to guard Tyler Johnson, who will be heading back to South Beach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.
Miami is also closing in on re-signing co-captain Udonis Haslem to a deal that will pay him just under $3 million next season, which will be his 14th with the Heat.
Sources also told ESPN.com that the Heat have agreed to send a future second-round pick and cash to the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for veteran power forward Luke Babbitt.
The Miami Heat will keep another young piece in Tyler Johnson as they look to rebuild after Dwyane Wade’s departure.
Johnson went undrafted out of Fresno State and played with Miami’s D-League team the Sioux Falls Skyforce before getting called up during the 2014-15 season. The shooting guard won an NCAA title at North Carolina and was Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four in 2009. He spent his first three years in Minnesota and has been on the move often since, playing for Memphis, Cleveland, Dallas, the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn since.
Ellington has four games of 25 or more points in his career, two of those coming against Miami. “Let’s get to work and make it a great season!!!”, Ellington wrote on Instagram.
Johnson appeared in 57 games with the Raptors last season, averaging 5.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
With Wade leaving, it has been a summer of transition for the Heat.
Wade, 34, instead agreed to a two-year, $47 million deal with the Bulls and confirmed on Saturday that a rift with Riley during the process factored in his decision to walk away. The Heat also signed guard Rodney McGruder to a partially guaranteed three-year contract last week.
