Sanders stalls in effort to oppose trade deal in platform
Clinton’s campaign noted that Sanders had supported increasing federal money for primary care.
Bernie Sanders ‘s delegates were thwarted Saturday in their attempt to push amendments blocking the Trans-Pacific Partnership, following a tense debatethat pitted Sanders backers and the Democratic Party’s left flank against Hillary Clinton’s supporters and President Barack Obama.
Clinton’s campaign said her proposal is part of her plan to provide universal health care coverage in the United States.
Clinton also said she would support allowing people 55 and older to buy into Medicare, a program now limited to those 65 and older. They plan to use the platform as a benchmark if she’s elected to the White House in November.
In another significant move, the committee also passed by one vote an amendment calling for marijuana to be removed from the federal list of controlled substances, a common talking point for Sanders during his campaign. He could seek to revive some of these issues at the convention.
“Democrats, you’ve been in denial too long”, said scholar and activist Cornel West in a passionate defense of the proposed amendments.
The New York Times reported on Thursday that an endorsement is imminent, and Sanders is expected to officially throw his support behind Clinton, a former us secretary of state, at a campaign stop in New Hampshire early next week.
But opposing a vote on the partnership would line up the party against Obama, who is championing the deal and who endorsed Clinton last week. In Pennsylvania, meanwhile, 72 percent of those who backed Mr. Sanders over Mr. Trump in a head-to-head match-up said they’d support Mrs. Clinton.
Democrats advanced this weekend what is easily their most liberal platform ever as representatives of Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton strove toward unity during a sometimes contentious party meeting. “To realize peace and support a fair two-state solution, we must defeat this amendment and support the base text of the platform”.
“I would like to say that while this vote was disappointing, we have won some tremendous victories”, Gunnels said, including securing language in the draft supporting a federal $15 minimum wage, another trademark issue for Sanders.
Now, with Sanders’s endorsement supposedly imminent, Clinton’s full re-embrace of the public option is likely created to court unimpressed Sanders supporters, and that and the other parameters of the new-and-improved plan were apparently the result of discussions with Team Sanders, according to Nate Cohn at the Huffington Post.
“The American people are sick and exhausted of hearing about your damn emails”, Sanders said during a debate with Clinton.
We have repeatedly asked to meet with Senator Sanders to discuss the possibilities for collaboration to continue to build a progressive revolution in the US.
His chief focus has been the Democratic platform, an issue-by-issue statement of party principles, to be adopted when Democrats meet for their national convention at the end of the month.
According to the Clinton campaign, her proposal would make money for these centers permanent and expand it by $40 billion over the next 10 years. “We want the Democratic Party to win and we want to beat Trump”, she said.
“I could not be more proud of the fact that this platform is poised to be the most progressive, ambitious and inclusive platform in the Democratic Party’s history”, Wasserman Schultz said. “The good news is that virtually everyone who spoke during the debate on trade made it clear that they opposed this unfettered free trade agreement”.
