Tate barely makes weight for UFC 200; Johny Hendricks misses
When the week started, Miesha Tate’s bantamweight title bout wasn’t the main event of the historic UFC 200 card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but events transpired and thrust this title bout into the spotlight. Apparently, this is the way she wants to deal with it. She’ll be back, though. Tate (18-5) is known for her grappling, tenacity and chin.
And then she barely made weight Friday.
Referee Herb Dean waved off the fight at 3 minutes, 16 seconds of Round 1 after Tate tapped out.
“Nina is the best training partner I’ve ever had in my life”, she said. This is what I’ve been telling everybody is that Amanda is very worthy to be here. Evinger is an openly gay fighter and it is inevitable that with the way she continues to win, the UFC cannnot ignore her any longer. My last couple fights I didn’t really fight the way I normally do and what got me here and I think I’ve got everything figured out.
The women’s bantamweight title is a hot potato, as evidenced yet again at UFC 200 on Saturday night. This is a big accomplishment for me.
So – who is Amanda Nunes?
Nunes’ win marks the third consecutive women’s bantamweight fight in which the title has changed hands. Holly Holm dethroned Rousey with a stunning knockout finish at UFC 193, but lost in her first title defense to Mieisha Tate.
On Friday, Tate said, “I’m going to go out there tomorrow and I’m going to rip her heart out of her chest”. She was the second-best fighter in her emerging sport, twice failing to stop Rousey’s remarkable rise to stardom.
“One day at a time”, Lesnar said.
“I’m older, and when I chose to make this comeback, it was a hard decision”, the 39-year-old Lesnar said. “Everybody knows that, but I’m the new champion”.
The pay-per-view card opened with former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez brutally stopping Travis Browne in the first round of a bout that could have headlined many other UFC cards.
“Just as it takes courage to step into the Octagon, it takes courage to stand for what you believe in – and we’re proud to stand with members of the LGBTQ community in their fight for equality”. Tate claims she was surprised when her next bout wasn’t a rematch with Holm, but she accepted the matchup. “I’m going to stomp on it, and I will be the reigning champion”. “I always come back stronger from these things”. I thought the removal of Jon Jones actually did a lot of beneficial for this card because it brought more people’s attention to the card.
