Yanez and Officer Joseph Kauser of the St. Anthony Police Department stopped Castile’s vehicle in Falcon Heights, a suburb of St. Paul the department patrols. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, also couldn’t be reached for comment; no one answered the door at her home Saturday afternoon. She could be heard saying Castile was shot after police pulled their auto over, citing a broken tail light.
For good reasons, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said Thursday he didn’t think a white driver would have been shot by the police in a similar situation. The 28-year-old has a wife and child, and graduated from Minnesota State University Mankato with a degree in law enforcement in 2010. Jacobs said the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New Orleans Division, the Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana have opened a civil rights investigation into Sterling’s death. “As this is an ongoing investigation we are not able to comment further at this time”, he said.
