Ghostbusters stars dismiss ‘stupid’ criticism of all-female reboot
“I think it’s always incredibly powerful when we see, in films and in art, the women that we are surrounded by”.
The movie has adventure, action, some decent scares and a lot of great laughs. But as I found on the internet what happens is the first wave is always wonderful.
You kind of hope the folks behind the new Ghostbusters threw out their phones and quit the Internet cold turkey a couple years ago.
Ghostbusters opens in theaters on July 15.
If you head over to the IMDb page for Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot, you’ll notice that the film has a user rating of 3.6 out of 10, which isn’t the lowest rating on the site – that honor belongs to a Turkish film from 2015 called Code Name: K.O.Z. We discussed his long history with the project, the challenge of reigniting the Ghostbusters franchise, and the rise of the Ghostbusters girls.
Yes, the Ghostbusters are back.
In case you’re doubting that anyone could possibly get angry about a fictional movie they haven’t seen, here ya go. I could only dream of getting that opportunity, which is all that it was at that time. Did you actually believe that everyone involved with the first movie and responsible for its iconic status would permit this new movie to be mediocre?
The new “Ghostbusters” is not a film that deserves any ire, and while it might not win over the angry haters who live to complain, it is a deftly made comedy with an excellent cast that should please many a theatergoer. I think it’s important for females, behind the camera talent, on any movie. At the premiere in Los Angeles on Saturday night, producer Amy Pascal – former CEO of Sony Pictures – told the Hollywood Reporter: “It’s going to be endless”. I’ve said from day one – I get that there is a bunch of people who just are trepidatious, nervous, mad that we’re doing a reboot. Paul Feig may well disagree. Yet Feig, studio Sony Pictures and their cast of amusing stars – Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig among them – have had to contend with the protestations of armchair quarterbacks bemoaning the film for not having a male cast like the 1980s originals. Those that do appear make little sense, including a winged dragon creature that crashes a heavy metal concert, and a Godzilla-scale anthropomorphic version of the animated series logo. I am surrounded by strong, flawed, funny, heroic, crazy, loving women.
How did the story develop from there? “This is going to be a reboot”. I wanted to be part of it to really show my support to them.
Will the original actors, Bill Murray and others, be playing their characters from 1984 film, in their cameos? With neon shining ghosts, insane possessions, and hilarious characters, the film tells the story of four female scientists who made a decision to start a ghost catching company. They do a lot of research and testing of things and what their testing was finding that people were very confused, like “Is it a new movie?” He’s responsible for numerous film’s biggest laughs as he struggles with simple tasks such as answering the phone or making coffee.
WGTC: Are you anxious to make a second film? One reads, “Ain’t no bitches gonna hunt no ghosts!”, a not so thinly-veiled reference to the sexism that seems to be fuelling some disapproval. “But I guess Columbia owns them so it would be up to them”.
That concludes our interview, but we’d like to thank Paul very much for his time.
Reitman is hopeful fans will be satisfied when the new flick hits theatres on Friday.
