North Korea says will treat US detainees under ‘wartime law’
The North frequently threatens to attack the South and USA interests in Asia and the Pacific.
North Korea says it will end a U.N. communication channel with the United States.
Given THAAD’s purported ability to defend against the North’s fast developing missile capabilities, South Korean President Park Geun-hye justified the decision Monday by highlighting her obligation to protect her country.
Pyongyang was also angered by moves by the United States and South Korea to deploy the advanced THAAD missile defence system on the Korean peninsula.
North Korea acquiring the ability to launch missiles from submarines would be an alarming development for rivals and neighbors because missiles from submerged vessels are harder to detect in advance.
In March, the UN Security Council imposed its toughest sanctions to date on North Korea after it carried out a fourth nuclear test and a long-range ballistic missile test soon afterwards.
The move comes on the heels of last week’s USA imposition of additional sanctions on North Korea – and, for the first time ever, on Jong Un specifically – for human rights’ abuses.
North Korea and the United States remain technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War, in which Washington sided with the South, ended only with a truce.
Seoul’s defense ministry urged Pyongyang to examine its behavior if it seeks to assign blame for the pending arrival of THAAD on the peninsula.
“If North Korea continues its groundless claims and rash actions in defiance of our warnings, it will have to face our military’s stringent retaliation”, a ministry spokesperson told reporters.
“They may also result in escalation of tensions in the region, new difficulties for resolving acute problems of the Korean Peninsula, including the task of its denuclearization”, Russian Foreign Ministry said last Friday.
Hundreds of thousands of people are believed to be in North Korea’s concentration camp system in horrifying conditions. The following year, a North Korean diplomat met with a USA official over a nuclear test.
The U.S. Strategic Command said that the missile was tracked Saturday over the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, where it apparently fell.
“It could also implement sanctions on politicians who advocated the deployment, ban their entry into China as well as their family business”.
A South Korean Defense Ministry official said the selection of a site for THAAD would come “within weeks”, and it and the USA plan to have it operational by the end of 2017.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye said the THAAD system was not meant to target any third country.
Unabashed, North then sent out several threatening signs and military provocations to neighbour and long-standing enemy, South Korea and its main ally, United States.
Last month, the communist regime claimed the successful launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile, saying it has the capacity to strike US forces in the Pacific region.
