Murray beats Raonic in 3 sets for 2nd Wimbledon championship
British tennis star Andy Murray has won his second Wimbledon tennis title, defeating Canada’s Milos Raonic in straight sets on Sunday.
Murray was even asked by a reporter during Wimbledon how it felt being Britain’s “last hope”, a question he jokingly dismissed by replying, “It’s not that bad, is it?” “I feel happier this time”. Then I had an overhead that I didn’t make the most of on my serve. “Thank you to all of my team for helping me get here”.
“I’ve had some great moments here and some tough moments so the win feels extra special because of those tough losses”.
And Murray admitted that he’d not enjoyed his maiden win as much as he could have – something he will put right this time.
This is Murray’s third slam with Lendl but first as a father.
Next month he will attempt to successfully defend his Olympic title and two weeks after that the final grand slam of the season starts in NY.
Williams still needs two more major titles to match Australian Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam crowns.
Murray also paid tribute to his family and his support team for their help in winning a third grand slam title. Murray is, however, visibly calmer with the American around.
When he sat in his sideline chair after the match concluded, Murray wiped away tears with a tournament towel.
Raonic was seeking to become the first player representing Canada to win a Grand Slam title.
“It’s been a phenomenal two weeks, and before that at Queen’s as well”.
Andy Murray and Milos Raonic are on serve at the first changeover of the second set in the Wimbledon final. He’d averaged 23 prior to the final. “But if you hit the marks and spots exactly, it’s going to be an ace, so Milos didn’t exactly hit the marks”.
Taking it all in from Murray’s guest box, with seemingly nary a smile, was coach Ivan Lendl. His approaches to the net often lacked bite and the result was Murray prospering. But he finished with just eight on Saturday, one more than Murray.
“Milos can play better”.
“This the most important tournament for me every year”, Murray said after his victory. “He needed to attack more in the returning game”.
Raonic’s serve “wasn’t great”, added the Italian. “I had a sense that if I could have gotten ahead there, maybe I could have turned it around a bit”. I was keeping up with him.
His opponent’s take? “He was playing much better than me off the baseline”, Raonic acknowledged.
If he was suffering from nerves at the outset, Raonic sure didn’t show it in the first game, holding comfortably as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge looked on. Murray cleverly prompted a volley error. Leading Murray 4-3, once again at 0-15 Raonic erred, this time on a backhand return. Raonic was never able to apply any real pressure to the Murray serve, earning only two break points midway through the third set.
Raonic served first and leads 2-1, but Murray won the first set 6-4.
He admirably took, though, Murray to another tiebreak.
But Raonic couldn’t handle a deep first serve on the first and netted a forehand return.
Raonic – one of tennis’ most thoughtful speakers – vowed to do all he could to attain the next level.
“I’m going to work on everything”, he promised. “I’m not going to leave any stone unturned. I got to carry that through to the next events”. He had a tremendous passion for the game and he listened really well and learned very well. I can improve there. “The next winners can try it again, but no dancing for me tonight – unless I have had a few glasses of Champagne, then it’s possible”. He would also be the first player other than Federer, Djokovic, Murray or Rafael Nadal to win Wimbledon since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.
“When you get into this situation where we now have this one-and-done match”, Reynolds said, “he’s an enhancement to that experience”.
