Hill says Democrats to have strong Senate pick
The move changes the dynamics of a race that was shaping up as a probable Republican win and according to at least one pundit has made the race a tossup. Politico reported this morning on a major shake-up in Indiana’s Senate race.
Bayh in 2010 chose to retire from the senate, saying Washington was broken, and that there were better ways to contribute to society.
Former Indiana senator Evan Bayh speaks in Indianapolis on May 1.
“I love working for the people of Indiana”. “This makes this entire election, so much more interesting”.
In a letter to supporters, Hill said “I have never run away from tough decisions or tough fights”. “Baron Hill has always put IN first and has been focused on setting aside party differences to strengthen our state and country”, said Bayh.
Of course, Republicans won’t give him a free pass. Republican Dan Coats won the seat and decided not to run for a third term.
Bayh is expected to announce today that he is seeking the party’s nomination to replace Hill on the November ballot.
Evan Bayh is making a return to IN politics.
Bayh, 60, served as governor of IN before winning election IN 1998 to the Senate seat his father, Birch Bayh, had held for decades.
Republicans have just one obvious target, in Nevada, where Sen. Marco Rubio reversed course and said he would run for re-election, despite having complained openly about his frustration with the Senate.
Republicans quickly declared they would hang onto the IN seat and signaled their lines of attack against Bayh.
A Trump campaign official described Mr. Evans’s figures as “wildly inaccurate” and said Mr. Trump would win any floor vote at the convention. Donnelly won the election in November 2012 after the campaign of GOP hopeful Richard Mourdock imploded over controversial abortion remarks.
Bayh has always been close to Bill and Hillary Clinton.
As alluded to above, IN is usually a solid red state, but the other Hoosier U.S. Senator, Joe Donnelly, is also a Democrat. And when Barack Obama and Harry Reid come calling, Bayh is standing at the ready. Dan Coats, who is retiring, and wrest back control from the U.S. Senate. For example, Democrats picked up eight seats in the chamber in 2008, while the GOP took a half-dozen seats back in 2010.
“He does so well with Independents and even some moderate Republicans that it impacts the entire ticket”, said Crooks.
The Democratic nominee for an Indiana U.S. Senate seat has dropped out of the race, making room for a new candidate.
