Canadian achieves first by overcoming Federer
The seven-time victor, Roger Federer, who had never lost in 10 previous semi-final clashes at SW19, held a comprehensive head-to-head advantage ahead of a dramatic thriller on Centre Court, but ultimately could not keep-up the Pace and threw away his 2-1 lead to suffer a 3-2 defeat against the Canadian.
Murray lost to Federer in the 2012 final at Wimbledon, then won the trophy a year later, the first British man to do since Fred Perry in 1936.
Roger Federer is one win away from his 11th Wimbledon final, while Andy Murray is chasing a spot in the title match for the third time. He would also be the first player other than Federer, Djokovic, Murray or Rafael Nadal to win Wimbledon since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.
There will also be added attention on McEnroe renewing his rivalry with Ivan Lendl, Murray’s coach whom he faced 10 times in major tournaments.
Two years ago, Raonic could find no solutions as he was dismantled by Federer at the same stage here, but this was Raonic 2.0 – tougher and stronger. “I know how difficult it is to make the finals of these events – and how hard they are to win”.
Gordon Reid of Britain won the first men’s singles wheelchair title at Wimbledon, beating Stefan Olsson of Sweden 6-1, 6-4 in Sunday’s final on Court 17.
What McEnroe did for Raonic was get him to be more emotional, which certainly McEnroe was when he played.
The 29-year-old Murray beat Raonic 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3 in the final at Queen’s Club and has a 6-3 overall record against Raonic.
Federer lost to Milos Raonic in five sets on Centre Court yesterday, after coming through a five-setter against Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals.
“When you get into this situation where we now have this one-and-done match”, Reynolds said, “he’s an enhancement to that experience”.
Both players secured early breaks in the opening set, but it was Murray that secured a vital second break at 3-4, before holding serve to record a 6-3 score in the first set.
“Milos has had a great few weeks on the grass and had some unbelievable wins, that semi-final against Roger (Federer) was a great match”, said the world number two.
Murray has been in the finals of all three Slams this year, losing to Djokovic in the Australian and the French.
“Andy has been playing great and he deserves to be winning here for the second time”, he said.
“I tried to put the things together”, Raonic said.
Federer blew a chance to close out the match in the fourth set as Raonic broke him in the final game to force a fifth set.
“To be very clear for you, I hope to be back on Centre Court”, Federer was quoted as saying by the BBC on Friday. “I made the most of it”. Berdych played a good drop shot, but Murray raced into the net and not only got to the ball but played a superb lob which landed just inside the baseline. “I’m going to continue to do the same because there’s nothing I want more than to be back here”.
“At the end of the day, I get to win Wimbledon”. I think that’s what made the biggest difference. “You tend to be too calm, try to get energy out of you, try to get it out of you on court and leave it all out there, try to get the most out of yourself”‘.
