Running of the bulls: 4 runners injured, none gored in Spain
Revelers run beside Pedraza de Yeltes’s fighting bulls as they go on the way of the Estafeta street during the fourth running of the bulls at the San Fermin Festival, in Pamplona, northern Spain, Sunday, July 10, 2016.
Five runners were taken to hospitals for general injuries after the near one-kilometre chase on Monday in which bulls from the Jandilla ranch took part, the Red Cross said.
Slips and falls, however, were constant by bulls and runners, and some participants were stampeded by the 1,300lbs (590-kilogram) animals on the way to the bullring.
A regional government statement later said three of the four – two Spaniards aged 42 and 22, and a 63-year-old American – were kept hospitalized. It gained fame worldwide after author Ernest Hemingway wrote about it in his 1920s novel, “The Sun Also Rises”.
In the nationally televised runs, thrill-seekers test their speed and bravery by racing with six fighting bulls and accompanying steer along a 930-yard (850-meter) course.
Peruvian bullfighter Andres Roca Rey covers his head after being gored by a bull during a bullfight of the 2016 San Fermin fiestas in Pamplona, Spain, Thursday, July 7, 2016. Till date, 15 people have been reported dead during the festival. Doing so may result in civil and/or criminal penalties.
