Eskimos ready for Riders QB Brett Smith; “we can’t take him lightly”
Smith would be the third quarterback to start for the Riders through the first six games of the season.
Glenn suffered a pectoral tear following Sunday’s loss against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Head coach Corey Chamblin announced that Glenn will not require surgery. It is unclear when Glenn will return.
He joins starting QB Darian Durant, whose ruptured Achilles tendon has him out for the year.
Edmonton defence will have to play physical against Saskatchewan’s No. 1 ranked running game anchored by Jerome Messam, who leads the CFL with 566 rushing yards. “He doesn’t have experience but he has youth”. “They’ve got a young quarterback but they also have a lot of people around him who are very good”. Smith is a raw rookie and he will surely be tested by the Eskimos’ top-ranked defence. “You don’t want to sit in there and take that heat”.
Sims went undrafted during the 2015 NFL Draft but did get a shot at mini camps with the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins but ultimately didn’t receive an offer.
The 22-year-old Smith is in his first CFL season after signing with Saskatchewan following his college career at Wyoming. Edmonton’s complex and unconventional blitzes tend to pose a challenge for even 15-year CFL veterans like Glenn, and they may be much more hard still for a rookie like Smith. The other quarterback on the Saskatchewan roster is Tino Sunseri. Chamblin said the Riders will look to add another quarterback shortly. “The time frame on that, I’m not sure of”. “I know we will be bringing in a new quarterback”.
