House Dem Kildee supports Obama’s Iran nuclear deal

He disputed the notion that there is a “sense of urgency” right now due to concerns, but rather said it is because many members of Congress are leaving town over the next few weeks so the President want to sit down and talk with many of them before they left.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), a member of the House Democratic leadership and a top Jewish Democrat, indicated this week that he was leaning against supporting the deal.

“Furthermore, I am deeply concerned that nearly all of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure would remain intact; this leads me to believe Iran would simply resume its pursuit of a nuclear weapon at the conclusion of the deal in a decade’s time”, she added. “And if Iran cheats, we will know it”.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters Thursday that President Barack Obama gave Democrats a “strong and forceful” presentation on the Iran deal, Wednesday evening at the White House.

The president has invited House Democrats to the White House for a meeting on Wednesday to talk about his legislative priorities, especially the Iran agreement, White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Tuesday.

“That’s not a practical alternative”, he said.

“After careful review and consultation, I will support the nuclear agreement with Iran“. However, I do not support this approach. Amir himself has said that he does not want his release to be traded for such concessions. Republicans mostly oppose the agreement and with majorities in both the House and Senate, will likely garner enough votes to back a disapproval of the deal. The July 14 nuclear deal reached between Iran and six major powers exchanges sanctions relief for nuclear restrictions. “I have every confidence a better deal can be realized”.

Kildee said knowing how to deal with the threat that Iran represents is a very hard question, but he has studied it in detail and met with President Obama and other administration officials.

“Last month the House unanimously called for the release of the U.S. citizens held in Iran, as well as information on any Americans who have disappeared”.
