Jets’ Richardson facing charges for resisting arrest

Already facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy, the Jets’ star defensive lineman was arrested on July 14 for resisting arrest and other traffic violations following an alleged case of street racing on a highway in Missouri, the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday.

The St. Charles County Prosecutor said Richardson was driving a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur that was allegedly clocked by police going as fast as 143 miles per hour. When police attempted to pull Richardson over, he allegedly accelerated and tried to avoid police, shutting his lights off and blowing several traffic lights in the process.

Police found a loaded semiautomatic handgun inside the vehicle and detected a strong odor of marijuana, according to the court documents.

Richardson will have to appear in court in St. Charles County, Missouri, in October.

According to Lohmar, resisting arrest – a misdemeanor – can be punished by up to a year in jail in addition to a $1,000 fine.

The officer also said the vehicle and all the passengers smelled of “burned marijuana”.

“I take full accountability for my actions”.

“I apologize for letting down my family, teammates, this organization and the fans, ” Richardson said in a statement, per NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus. Lohmar told reporters Richardson possessed the gun legally and that there was no evidence to charge him with drug offenses. “I can say no. I just chose not to”, Richardson said. It was a depressing time in my offseason and that’s just that.

Richardson, who made the Pro Bowl last season, worked with the second-team defense during the Jets’ first practice of training camp while first-round draft pick Leonard Williams was with the starters. That’s just that. It’s that simple.
