Tiger Woods pulls out of PGA Championship
Harold Varner III took Woods’ spot in the PGA Championship field.
Woods also last won a PGA Tour competition in 2013, with the past three seasons almost total washouts as he struggled with nerve pain in his back. Woods has undergone three back surgeries since March 2014.
A week later, the 14-times major champion said he was feeling better and had intentions of playing again. It is still unknown as to when he will return to the game, but for now, the four-time PGA Champion will sit this one out. Where and when will we see Tiger again is a question now that will pick up major steam. Is Woods pulling the plug on the season because he’s not ready or is he coming to the realization that he may not be able to recover. Or will Tiger Woods hang up his clubs rather than be a middle-of-the-pack player.
The 40-year-old has not won a tournament since 2013, and hasn’t won a major since 2008.
Despite the injuries and the off-the-course issues, Tiger said back in May that he believed that both the PGA Tour career victories and majors records were still “attainable”, according to The Big Lead. If Woods is looking at a 2017 return, that would be the place for him to appear.
Tiger: “Mmmmm-hmmmm”, he said, lips pursed. “I’ll have a different answer”.
First of all, did Woods go to LeBron James’ school of cryptic sayings to the media? Full coverage of the Masters, Open Championship, US Open, US PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. “If I knew, I’d tell you, because it’d be fun to know”.
