Third Eye Blind taunts GOP during convention, gets booed
Third Eye Blind was the headliner for a concert on Tuesday night during the Republican National Convention and co-sponsored by the Recording Industry Assn. of America to benefit Musicians on Call, a charity organization. He also reportedly requested of concertgoers, “Raise your hand if you believe in science”, according to Rolling Stone, which was met with more boos.
The taunting continued through the night regardless of the boos and jeers from the crowd. “I’m the motherf**king artist up here”.
In 2012, Stephan Jenkins, singer for ’90s movie trailer mainstays Third Eye Blind, penned a column for The Huffington Post explaining “why we aren’t playing the Republican National Convention”.
Audience members were apparently bummed not just because of the pro-acceptance talk, but also because “Jumper” was the only hit they played. The band did opt to play “Jumper” – which Jenkins previously described to Billboardas, “a noir about a guy who jumped off a bridge and killed himself because he was gay”.
“Now that Third Eye Blind has weighed in, let’s find out what the Goo Goo Dolls think of the 2016 election”, tweeted Matt Walsh.
One fan wrote to 3EB on Twitter, saying that they “have never been more disappointed”. The band responded with a simple “good”.
The band has spent the past 12 hours replying to people who praised them on Twitter, as well as those who were upset by the performance.
“Great question”, the band wrote.
Members of the San Fransisco band Third Eye Blind, hired to play at an event at the Republican National Convention, are at the centre of no small controversy after apparently refusing to pay any of their hits, mocking numerous Republicans’ political positions and poking fun at people who complained on social media.
