We Can’t Get Enough Of Colbert’s RNC Coverage: “Make America Melania Again”
The actress dressed as Melania Trump, 46, for a sketch on The Late Show on July 19 and issued her version of Donald Trump’s wife’s apology for plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic Convention speech.
Just in case that didn’t amuse you enough.
“There’s no cribbing of Michelle Obama’s speech”.
It’d nearly be worth it to have Melania as First Lady to get more of Laura’s shenanigans.
Colbert admitted that he had a personal friendship with the Trumps, despite his previous commentary, and that he wanted to give Melania Trump an opportunity to set the record straight on national television with a statement of her own.
Mrs. Trump (played by dead-ringer for the future possible first lady, Broadway star Laura Benanti) gave a rousing speech-that she wrote herself-to the audience. “I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two and say, ‘Well, just because one show has this, why doesn’t the other?'”
I think he was afraid of me. Hakuna Matata! … I’m lovin’ it. It was very fast; I probably should’ve been working up my dialect earlier, but I hadn’t really heard her talk that much.
“I’m going to have a second career as an impersonator”, Benanti joked. Said Meyers on NBC’s “Late Night”: “Melania did it: She found something less original than being a model married to an old billionaire”. They made them a little bit larger; they made them comically big, which I appreciated. But her appearance on Tuesday’s “The Late Show” might change that. Examples included “I’m from a communist country where we share everything, including speeches”, “The drugs I take to get through sex hadn’t worn off” and “Chris Christie ate my first draft”. This was ideal because it was so meta – Corden quite happily, gleefully stealing classic Letterman, and calling it his own. Naturally, there were also some Pokemon Go references. Dave, of course. This wasn’t stealing.
