Meredith McIver, Melania Trump’s speechwriter, is a real person
Immediately following the statement’s release, internet users and news outlets began searching for more information about McIver.
Meredith McIver, an in-house Trump staff speechwriter, had apologised for the plagiarism in the first address by Melania to the party members here in a bid to project the real estate tycoon and reality TV star as a serious-minded family man and unite the still divided opinion within the party.
Even weirder: a photo that someone claiming to be McIver posted on Twitter (the very first tweet from a just-created Twitter account) of McIver posing with Trump was exposed as a Photoshopped fake. “I feel a deep sense of remorse that I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is”.
“I offered my resignation to Trump and the Trump family, but they rejected it. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences”, McIver said.
The “U” says Meridth McIver graduated in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in English.
However, there is indeed someone named Meredith McIver who apparently serves as a writer in the Trump organization, with her name appearing on Trump’s 2009 book “Think Like a Champion”.
She has co-written four books with Donald Trump, and according to a 2007 deposition for a civil lawsuit, Trump said McIver was to blame for several factual errors about his wealth in two of the books. Whether this Meredith McIver is the same person taking the fall for the cribbed speech, however, is a mystery yet to be solved. “As you know, my door is always open, so Meredith has heard everything, and she’s taken good notes”, he wrote. “More than ever, I am honoured to work for such a great family”, she said.
According to BuzzFeed News, McIver is a registered Democrat living in Manhattan.
