Newt Gingrich Talks Candidly About Race at the Republican National Convention
Bush said recently he fears for the future of the Republican Party.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich finished as a runner-up in the race to be Donald Trump’s running mate, but he told reporters Monday morning that Trump did the right thing in choosing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence instead. “Jeb loss. Get over it”.
Neither former President George H.W. Bush or his son, former President George W. Bush, plan to endorse Trump, they announced in May.
“I’m anxious”, Bush told them, “that I will be the last Republican president”.
Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, who clashed with Trump in his attempt to mend fences with congressional Republicans earlier this month, has said he will be “mowing my lawn”, according to the New York Times.
In addition to personal attacks against Jeb Bush and the legacy of President George W. Bush during the primary campaign, Trump has broken with the Bush family on several issues with which they’ve always been associated: free-trade agreements, a revamped immigration system, entitlement spending and the use of American leadership on the world stage.
“It is inconceivable for somebody to come out of nowhere, who has never run for president before”, Trump said.
Gingrich was the opening speaker at the New York GOP breakfast Monday despite some initial resistance over scheduling, as first reported by The Post.
“It’s talking about being formed by one’s faith, it’s at the core of the Catholic faith and to imagine how we are going to succeed in our country unless we have committed family life, committed child-centered family system is hard to imagine”, Bush continued. “Both Narendra Modi and Donald Trump are very practical guys”.
What we are seeing is the old, establishment Republicans – with whose policies we might vehemently disagree – take a stand against the national disgrace that is Donald Trump.
Trump appeared in a videotaped message to thank supporters. “He brought these people into the party who weren’t involved”. Politico reported that top Republicans are already planning ahead for how to fix whatever mess Trump makes. The last Republican to win was Ronald Reagan in 1984, when he trounced Walter Mondale in one of the largest landslides in US history.
