Lupita N’yongo headed for New York stage
Oscar victor Lupita Nyong’o will star in Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed at The Public Theater. The drama is a look at the Liberian Civil War from the perspective of the captive wives of a Liberian rebel officer. “We are delighted to welcome the extraordinary Lupita Nyong’o to The Public in this vitally important play”, commented artistic director Oskar Eustis in a press statement.
It follows these women as their lives are thrown into further chaos when a new woman arrives.
Lupita is sure to be working hard on preparing for the play, which starts previews on September 29, has its opening night on October 14 and continues until November 8. As an actress, she is now featured as Michonne on AMC’s “The Walking Dead“.
Other plays – including In The Continuum, The Convert, and Familiar – have been produced for the stage.
Nyong’o, 32, hasn’t done too much since winning Best Supporting Actress for “12 Years a Slave” at the 2014 Academy Awards beyond appearing in the hotly anticipated “Star Wars” sequel that will be released in December. She additionally just wrapped production in Uganda on Mira Nair’s The Queen of Katwe opposite David Oyelowo, and lends her voice to Jon Favreau’s upcoming Jungle Book.
In the meantime, the actress announced Thursday that she had travelled back to her native Kenya to work with worldwide conservation organisation WildAid.
