Donald Trump Pledges ‘Law and Order’ In 76-Minute Speech
The speech bounced across a diverse range of topics, from attacks on Hillary Clinton, pledges that he’s the “law and order candidate”, overtures to Bernie Sanders supporters to vote for him, even a pledge to protect the LGBTQ community, to name just a few. He managed to make the argument, compellingly, that these challenges were the central ones America faced and that given the failures of President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, his way of change was the only way to go.
Donald Trump “humbly” accepted the Republican nomination for president Thursday night, delivering a blistering speech that painted America as being crippled by chaos and himself as its only savior.
And Trump made little effort to hide where he thinks the threat is coming from, noting that illegal immigrants “are roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens”. Delegates responded with chants of “Build that wall, build that wall”.
Trump’s acceptance speech marks the end of a convention that was as fraught as any in recent decades. He also has to convince swing voters that a swashbuckling NY real estate tycoon – whose catchphrase as the star of the reality TV show “The Apprentice” was “You’re fired” – could be trusted with the presidency. Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.
“It brought a lot of Americans together”, said Derek Kreifels, a delegate from Shawnee, Kansas. Two nights later, Trump delegates booed and cat-called Cruz when the Texas senator pointedly refused to endorse the party nominee during a prime-time speech. “For some reason, he shouted the speech”, he said. But it was designed also to emphasise the perceived qualities that attracted primary voters to him in the first place: his promise to be a strong leader with a disdain for political correctness. Underscoring his unorthodox candidacy, Trump doubled down on the hard-line immigration policies that fired up conservatives in the primary but broke with many in his party by promising protections for gays and lesbians.
“Trump is making us the inclusive party”, Lucas said. “They said, ‘We’re moving it.’ And Kimmel and Fallon and all the shows, they all went back a long way ’cause they weren’t gonna miss this convention”.
“I am your voice”, Trump said. “It felt very authentic because he added those Trumpisms that make him very compelling to viewers”.
While the real estate tycoon turned politician believes most of the convention attendees at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena were captivated by his lengthy oration, his youngest son, Barron, looked dreadfully bored. “Now that he’s been nominated, I want to see what he’s going to do”, said Dean Narang, the head of Broward County Republicans, an influential bloc of voters in southern Florida.
Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, made the biggest strides toward that goal.
Anti-Trump protesters near the Republican National Convention. That is, Hillary Clinton is a liar.
Trump often appeared to be his own worst enemy during the week. “Which is good.” Portman faces a tough reelection fight and has been reluctant to embrace the nominee though he is hesitant to criticize Trump.
Donald Trump and the party aimed to use the four-day spectacle to present themselves as the party of change with a refreshing, if contentious, new approach to government and politics. And Trump’s own exposition of his foreign policy views was rattling allies at home and overseas.
Trump said the USA would work with Israel to destroy the “barbarians of ISIS”, and vowed to end what he called “policy of nation-building and regime change”, saying that “instead we must work with all of our allies who share the goal of destroying ISIS and Islamic terrorism”.
“We are going to take care of this country first”, he told the Times, “before we worry about everyone else in the world”.
In response, state Sen. The convention crowd chanted, “USA!” for much of the time as Trump stood silently at the podium. He said he will not sign “bad” trade agreements.
Republicans can either allow Trump to rebrand the GOP as unstable, xenophobic and crude, or they can regain control of their party.
