Donald Trump Jr. almost sparked another Speechgate at the RNC
Though Melania Trump had read the Obama lines her over the phone to McIver, citing them as a source of inspiration, Mciver said the plagiarism was her “mistake”. According to her statement, McIver offered her resignation, which she said Donald and Melania Trump did not accept.
Donald Trump Jr was saved from embarrassment by one of his speechwriters after similarities were noted in his keynote speech to the Republican National Convention and an article in a conservative publication. How that had come about remained unclear.
Then, Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort outdid Monday morning’s errors, when he went after “petulant” (but popular with the not entirely irrelevant voters of Ohio) Gov. John Kasich.
As for the fact that Melania had several words that were exactly the same as Obama’s, Pierson said, “There were probably 50, 60 words that were similar”. “These were common words and values that she cares about her family, things like that”.
Trump blamed presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, a former US secretary of state, for the numerous problems facing the USA, though without calling her “Crooked Hillary” or echoing numerous insults directed at her throughout the four-day convention.
“This was my mistake and I feel awful for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama”, the statement said.
“There’s no cribbing of Michelle Obama’s speech”, he said.
There’s another member of the Trump family that some observers are noting could have a political future after his big convention speech – Donald Trump Jr.
As he has in recent weeks, Trump pledged to bring back law and order to the US, echoing a theme that Richard Nixon used to win the White House in 1968. It wasn’t a speech writer, this was somebody who was not part of the campaign.
Donald Trump also cited McIvers by name in a 2007 deposition for a civil lawsuit for errors in his books.
She explained how the whole issue happened in the first place. I am so proud to be your nominee for president. “Her bad instincts and her bad judgment – something pointed out by Bernie Sanders – are what caused numerous disasters unfolding today”. Melania has sat for a handful of interviews, in which she’s described herself as a private person, focused on raising the couple’s 10-year-old son, Barron. “But she’s a good woman, she’s a strong woman”.
Meanwhile, Pierson said she doesn’t know if Donald is “furious” about it, but she noted that he is definitely “concerned”. “It’s not going to work against Melania Trump”. And they were sympathetic that her moment in the sun had turned into the latest black eye for her husband’s rocky campaign.
