WikiLeaks dump could confirm Sanders fans’ worst fears about the DNC
(The Hill) Top officials at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) privately planned how to undermine Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign, according to a trove of emails released by WikiLeaks on Friday.
The email release will reignite that controversy just days before Democrats gather in Philadelphia for their convention to officially nominate Clinton for president.
In the almost 20,000 searchable emails sent and received by Communications Director Luis Miranda, Finance Chief of Staff Scott Comer, and other top DNC operatives, Sanders’ campaign was dismissed as amateurish and ill-fated. The email does not mention Sanders by name.
In May, chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (DWS) reacted to an MSNBC anchor criticizing her treatment of Bernie Sanders during the Democratic presidential primary by trying to force her to apologize. I think I read he is an atheist.
In an email leaked Friday by Wikileaks Brad Marshall, the DNC’s chief financial officer suggested that the party should “get someone to ask” about “his” religious beliefs, The Intercept reported. This could make several points difference with my peeps.
Neither the DNC nor Marshall immediately responded to requests for comment. I can say it would not have been Sanders. The leaks come from the accounts of seven key figures in the DNC: Communications Director Luis Miranda (10770 emails), National Finance Director Jordon Kaplan (3797 emails), Finance Chief of Staff Scott Comer (3095 emails), Finance Director of Data & Strategic Initiatives Daniel Parrish (1472 emails), Finance Director Allen Zachary (1611 emails), Senior Advisor Andrew Wright (938 emails) and Northern California Finance Director Robert (Erik) Stowe (751 emails).
The DNC temporarily curtailed Sanders’ access to the list in December 2015 because the organization accused the insurgent campaign of illegally tapping into confidential voter information compiled by the Clinton campaign.
It was well known that there had been friction between the Sanders campaign and an ostensibly impartial party apparatus. Some emails in the leak don’t look great for the DNC. He noted that Munger was one of the largest donors to Organizing for America, a nonprofit that advocates for Obama’s policies.
Shapiro pushed back, noting that Munger had given only $100,600 to the party, while the Potarazu family had contributed $332,250.
Weaver also said the emails may make it harder to promote party unity as Sanders’ supporters mix with Clinton’s majority at the Philadelphia convention. The tiers range from a direct donation of $66,800 to one of $467,600 to the DNC.
