Hillary Clinton visits Orlando Pulse, promises to make changes to protect LGBT
Clinton’s two Florida appearances Friday, in Orlando and at the state fairgrounds in Tampa, were both in the heart of one of America’s pivotal electoral battlegrounds, the I-4 corridor that slices across the state’s midsection fom Tampa to Daytona Beach and as the gateway to Disney World, a highway that’s familiar to tourists everywhere.
Hillary Clinton is calling the Republican convention “perversely flattering”, saying the speakers spent more time talking about her than the problems facing the country.
“Where I live I wouldn’t even put a Hillary sign because it’s so bad”, said Sandra Sanchez of Port Charlotte. I met others who barely escaped after hiding from the killer. I thank everyone who is here representing various aspects of the Orlando community.
She also said we have to go after the online radical Islamist terror network, though she avoided using the term. “Well, but I’m proud of everyone in this country who gets up every day and makes a contribution”. She also commented that it was important to “be very clear who this attack targeted”. “And we have to stand up against this hate and divisiveness”.
Each person who came to watch had a preference for who they’d like to see stand by Clinton’s side. We do have to take on the epidemic of gun violence, particularly assault weapons, the havoc and horror that they bring in their wake is just no longer tolerable.
Christine Leinonen, mother of Christopher “Drew” Leinonen, told reporters Clinton sent her a personal letter after her son and his boyfriend Juan Ramon Guerrero were killed at Pulse.
Cruz declined to endorse Trump Wednesday night and was booed by the arena crowd when he urged Republicans to “vote your conscience”.
“I think Florida will go Clinton but probably Lee County, Trump”, he said. Tim Kaine as her pick for vice president, she announced on Twitter.
While not trying to politicize the tragedy, the move can certainly be seen as Clinton showing her support for and sympathy with the LGBT community in the wake of the close of the RNC and the virulently anti-equality platform the GOP made a decision to adopt this election year. “He doesn’t understand we Americans are strong, big-hearted, results-oriented generous people”. “The police captain in charge of the response team talked with such conviction about how when his men arrived, they were ready”.
Democrats say it’s no coincidence she decided to make this announcement in Florida – the largest swing state.
Clinton said Trump’s convention address offered a “dark and divisive” vision of the future.
