New Sonic the Hedgehog 2D game announced for spring 2017
The first game, seen above, is Sonic Mania which is a return to old school mechanics with 2D platforming.
Sonic Mania will drop sometime during spring of 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and it feels a bit unusual to not include the Dreamcast on that list.
We didn’t learn much about the game, but the video did show Sonic dashing through a post-apocalyptic landscape where he was eventually joined by “Classic Sonic” from Sonic Generations, so we might be looking at a sequel to that game.

The game will feature some familiar levels as well as new ones. Sonic fangame developer Christian Whitehead, and retro specialists Headcannon Games and Pagodawest Games are teaming up for the joint venture, which might finally be what Sonic fans have been clamouring for all these years? He’s regained his classic experience and has tossed away the scarf in a brand new 3D adventure which reminds us a lot of Sonic Generations.
Sega’s recent 25th anniversary celebration of the Sonic franchise held at San Diego Comic-Con ended up providing series fans with more than just a reason to celebrate all things Sonic related. When I think of Sonic Team now, it’s not where it was, this game reminds me more of the GBA releases than the first two greats of the Megadrive era. You will also get the chance to play as Sonic, Tales, and Knuckles. In the case of “Sonic 2”, he even completed and restored the Hidden Palace Zone, which had been famously scrapped from the original game late in production.
Both Sonic Mania and Project Sonic 2017 will launch next year in all regions on consoles and PC. Behold Sonic Mania, a super deluxe remake of every 2D Sonic game from the early 90’s – at the same time! Plus, the upcoming action and comedy of Sonic the Hedgehog will inspire a new Nintendo 3DS game, Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice [September 27]. To help, it will particularly have to rely on Sonic of the past, a concept that is reminiscent of Sonic Generations. However, this game, being developed by the Sonic team, will be available on the Nintendo NX platform as well.
