Obama to host Mexican president for White House talks
“We’re not just strategic and economic partners, we’re also neighbors and we’re friends”, Obama said. Former Obama Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to become the Democratic nominee for president when her party convenes next week in Philadelphia.
The president countered Trump’s assertion by saying that the “facts” show the numbers of violent crimes and illegal immigrants in the U.S.to be the lowest in decades.
“America is much less violent than it was 20 or 30 years ago”, Obama said. Pena Nieto avoided questions about the wall, but has previously said that Mexico will not pay for the wall Trump proposes.
During his speech to Republican delegates in Cleveland, Trump painted a dire portrait of a nation wracked by crime and people who have given up work. He also noted that while violent crime has seen an uptick in some cities this year, the overall rate of it is far lower than it was both when Ronald Reagan was president and when Obama took office.
“I’m confident that our nations will continue to grow even stronger and more prosperous together”, Obama said during a joint news conference with Nieto.
Trump on Thursday repeated his assertion that he would build a wall across the U.S.
President Obama had a celebration for Islamic holiday Eid al-Fitr at the White House. “The closeness between the United States and Mexico is more than a relationship between governments”.
“There are going to be different visions about where should be going as a country; how we can provide jobs… how we make sure our tax system is fair”, Obama said of Democrats and Republicans.
The presidents met at the White House to discuss and celebrate U.S. -Mexico relations. -Mexican border “to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities”.
In that speech, Obama appeared loathe to mention Trump by name, preferring instead to make implicit references to his policies and rhetoric.
While such preferences among people outside the US may not mean much for the election, the State Department estimates one million Americans live in Mexico.
