Cubs Close To Acquiring Aroldis Chapman From Yankees
Considering what the Yankees gave up for Chapman and the fact that they have two superior closers already on the team, getting Torres back in return would be an absolute steal. Aroldis Chapman may only toe the mound as a Bomber just a few more times. The 28-year-old, seven-year veteran has 20 saves with a 2.01 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 0.89 WHIP this season. He has only blown one save and continuously reaches well over 100 miles per hour with his fastballs, making a Yankees ticket worth the staggering price if he toes the mound.
The Cubs are actually more interested in Andrew Miller, but that’s not going to happen, and it seems like the Yankees are pleased with what Washington are offering them, but have asked the other “contenders” for Chapman to submit improved offers.
Now, several months after originally acquiring Chapman, the Yankees are nearing a trade to deal him elsewhere.
Chapman served a 30-game suspension at the start of this season under Major League Baseball’s new policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. The primary motivation here is he is a free agent after the season.
“I’m a huge Chapman fan … since Day One when he got over here”. They were lacking a left-handed option to use in late game situations, which is part of the reason that they acquired Mike Montgomery from the Seattle Mariners earlier in the week. “And he’s been very professional”, Brett Gardner said. Though, admittedly, that consensus was formed before the Cubs entered the period of sustained success that Theo Epstein and company spoke about when they first took control of the team’s baseball department. Despite some reports that the Cubs were trying to complete a contract extension with Chapman before announcing the deal, FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the club has not had extension talks with the lefty to this point.
