‘Star Trek Beyond’ honors its heritage while planning for the future

The 2013 follow-up, Star Trek Into Darkness, seemed to bite off more than it could chew though, with an overly convoluted plot and unnecessary throwbacks, particularly in the way they brought back Khan.

However, Takei disagrees with this decision because it was not the intention of Gene Roddenberry (the creator of Star Trek).

So when the actor Chris Pine – who plays Kirk in the current series of rebooted movies – says, “I ripped my shirt, again”, after his peace offering to a delegation of tiny, gargoyle-like aliens goes awry, the in-joke, which opens “Star Trek Beyond”, hits on all cylinders: aliens; good intentions thwarted; violent conflict; and, perhaps most importantly, a sense of winking, self-aware humor.

“Beyond”, then, is in the position of representing all that Trek stands for on its golden anniversary. As he reminded his fellow crew members in various “Star Trek” episodes, he was a doctor, not a bricklayer, scientist, mechanic, magician or miracle worker. The new director, Jeremy Lin, is famed for his work on the “Fast and Furious” series, and the new trailer even has a sequence on dirt bikes for some reason.

Karl Urban had no real interest in returning to the role of Leonard “Bones’ McCoy after making “Star Trek Into Darkness”. That may effect some of my credibility for a few of the Trekkies and Trekkers out there or at least give an understanding of my taste within the STAR TREK universe.

“We suggest you go, because you’re going to learn some stuff, you’re going to hear some announcements that I think we’re all going to be really excited about”. In this new timeline, Spock and Kirk are enemies, Kirk isn’t the captain of the Enterprise, and things are just different enough to allow for some creative license.

Kirk, on the brink of throwing in his Captaincy in favour of a less adventurous role in Starfleet, accepts the mission, only to find himself, his crew and his ship out of control and lost on a remote and unhospitable planet.

According to Marinaccio, the opening lines of “Star Trek” are actually a mission statement, a statement that is succinct and memorable. Which isn’t surprising as Simon Pegg (who also plays wisecracking engineer Scott) is one of the main screenwriters, alongside Doug Jung.

In this new installment, the crew of the USS Enterprise is tasked with rescuing a crew that was stranded on a distant planet.

The Enterprise crew rush to the aid of the ship only to discover it’s a trap set by an interplanetary warlord known as Krall (Idris Elba).

Lin showed in the “Fast & Furious” movies his ability to stage high-speed action.

While there is no after-credits scene in Star Trek Beyond to foreshadow what comes next in the movie series, J.J. Abrams has already talked upcoming movies, essentially assuring to fans that they will see more of it in the future.

At Wednesday night’s Comic-Con premiere of Star Trek Beyond, Abrams spoke to EW about the story of the fourth film, saying that it’s his “favorite Star Trek story that we’ve had”. There are reflections on mortality that will make even the most casual Trek fan misty eyed. “And I feel like Star Trek maintains a position of inclusivity and unity that is as resonant today as it was in the last 60s”, Zachary Quinto said.
