Jürgen Klopp convinced me to choose Liverpool — Georginio Wijnaldum
He was signed by PSV Eindhoven in 2011 after making over a hundred appearances for Feyennoord, but it was apparent that they were never going to hold on to him for long given his natural ability.
Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed that he rejected a potential move to Everton in order to join their Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
The Dutch worldwide decided upon his next destination after a personal meeting with Klopp – which convinced both of them that it was the right move for both parties.
Pochettino and Koeman were hoping to acquire the versatile midfielder.
“It was straight after the conversation I had with Jurgen Klopp that I had the feeling that I wanted to come to Liverpool”, he said.
“But there had to be a match”. He is in charge and if a trainer wants you, it gives you more confidence.
“I was waiting to see what interest Everton showed in me but Liverpool’s interest was greater”.
After Liverpool completed the £23 million signing of Georgio Wijnaldum, Sam May takes a look at why he would be the flawless addition. The fact the high performing 25-year-old is versatile is something that Klopp likes.
And the player highlights why the discussion influenced the decision on his future so heavily. “I was very happy with the progress made last season”, Whelan told the Mirror.
“He has played a lot for his country already, been captain at a young age in Holland and also been involved in a tough Premier League season so this experience gives him a good foundation for the challenge here – which everybody knows is huge”. He told me first of all that he wanted me to stay.
“Something like that is always good to hear”. He didn’t want to disown (disappoint?) me but he made it clear that if a great offer came, Newcastle would think about it.
The star concluded: “He showed how good he is at [Borussia] Dortmund with all the success he had”.
Nevertheless, he still insisted that it’s “down to each of us” in the team to “force our way” into Klopp’s thinking, which he says will be done by “performing well on the training field” and “showing the manager you deserve to play”. ‘The biggest thing he said to me was that he wanted me to stay.
