Donald Trump ‘Will Not Accept’ If Ted Cruz Endorses Him
“If he gives it, I will not accept it, just so you understand”.
“He should’ve done it, because nobody cares, and he would’ve been in better shape for four years from now ― I don’t see him winning anyway, frankly ― but if he did, it’s fine”, he added.
Of a Trump victory, he writes: “As of today, as things stand now, I believe this is going to happen – and in order to deal with it, I need you first to acknowledge it, and then maybe, just maybe, we can find a way out of the mess we’re in”. But the GOP nominee spent most of the news conference pounding Cruz, who finished second to Trump in a bruising primary campaign that began as a field of 17.
Trump said if Cruz had endorsed him, it may have brightened his former rival’s future presidential prospects.
If Cruz was indeed relaxing at home watching the speech, he saw what came next: Trump again attacked Cruz’s father. He said last April that transgender people should be able to use the restroom of their choice and that bathroom laws are a waste of taxpayers’ money only to change that stance the very next day. “I think he’s a lovely guy, a lovely guy”.
“Are you allowed to set up a super PAC, Mike, if you are the president?” he asked his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, in front of the cameras. “I know nothing about Lee Harvey Oswald”.
Hopes that the two could bury the hatchet and unite the party disappeared when Cruz spoke on Wednesday, urging Republicans to “vote your conscience” but refusing to accede to chants of “Endorse Trump” that were followed by a loud chorus of boos. The governor said much of his speech was well received, except for the “implied” comment about not voting for Trump.
“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Cruz said.
Trump likewise said it was “dishonorable” of Cruz to abandon his pledge to support the Republican nominee.
But Trump appeared to dispute that on Friday morning, saying Cruz went off-script at the convention. The ad was put out by a PAC with no official ties to the Cruz campaign, but Trump said Friday that he doesn’t buy that.
