Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake forgets to gavel in DNC
Rawlings-Blake is a last-minute fill-in Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the ousted Democratic National Committee leader.
Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake raises the gavel as she calls the convention to order during the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, July 25, 2016.
Instead, Rawlings-Blake performed the honorary duty of ringing in the convention with the strike of a gavel.
The task usually goes to the Democratic Party chairperson, but Debbie Wasserman Schultz is at the center of the controversy surrounding WikiLeaks’ publishing of thousands of internal emails revealing a disdain for Sen.
In a brief phone conversation with the Sun Sentinel newspaper of Ft. The Vermont senator has been gracious, saying Wasserman Schultz “deserves thanks for her years of service” but adding that “the party now needs new leadership that will open the doors of the party and welcome in working people and young people”.
The Democratic National Committee offered its “deep and honest apology” to Bernie Sanders, his supporters and the entire party for what it calls “the inexcusable remarks made over email”. Glenn said she would consider walking out of the convention hall if the Florida congresswoman spoke at the opening. They’re probably hoping that focus is thereby less on Bernie Sanders, who also speaks tonight.
Cheryl Glenn, a delegate for Sanders, says it’s important for Sanders to support Clinton, so Democrats are successful in November.
