Twitter to live stream more sports including major league baseball
On top of that, Twitter has arranged for digital broadcast network 120 Sports to produce a new, multi-sports highlights show for the microblogging platform.
As with Twitter’s other sports streaming deals, the games will be available for free to users regardless of whether they are logged into Twitter. Earlier this year, Twitter agreed to pay $10 million a year for the rights to stream 10 NFL Thursday night games in 2016. Major League Baseball games on Twitter also will be available worldwide, except in select global territories.
“It’s a ideal companion to an already great sports experience on Twitter”.
While the exact details of the financial terms have not been revealed, Twitter has committed an undisclosed sum of money in ad sales for the live games as part of the partnership. The company will have exclusive rights to the content, which will be produced by 120 Sports.
That means Twitter has now secured three separate made-for-Twitter programs that will begin streaming on the platform sometime this fall. Anything that happens, you see it first on Twitter.
The Rally and National Hockey League games will be USA only; the MLB games will be available nearly everywhere.
The deal was struck between Twitter (TWTR -0.2%) and MLB Advanced Media.
Twitter’s user growth remains sluggish, and the company is clearly trying to reinvigorate its platform by making it the go-to destination for live sports, news and media broadcasts. During live sporting events, Twitter routinely becomes a vibrant forum for fans where witty banter is exchanged, rumors that might not make the TV commentary are aired, and trash is talked.
In recent years, MLBAM has emerged as a pioneer in streaming sports, operating the websites for Major League Baseball and its 30 teams and streaming live online video and audio for most games. In addition to pro teams, The Rally will offer highlights on both the Olympics and college sports.
