‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ first look swings into Comic-Con
Fans were treated to new footage of Scott Derrickson’s “Doctor Strange“, opening on November 4, in which Benedict Cumberbatch plays brain-surgeon-turned-sorcerer Stephen Vincent Strange.
The cast of Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, out on May 5 next year, entered amid cheers, as new footage revealed the inclusion of Sylvester Stallone in the film and Kurt Russell as Star Lord’s (Chris Pine) father Ego.
They kicked things off with “Black Panther”, which doesn’t start shooting until January for a release in 2018.
Chadwick Boseman plays the titular hero while Michael B. Jordan is his arch nemesis, Erik Killmonger, and Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o plays the warrior Nakia. Actually, it began even before the trailer reveal, as Marvel kicked off the panel by having Hall H’s screens rolled back to have smoke billow out to fill the area.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is just 10 days into its shoot, but audiences at Comic-Con have already seen a first look at the film.
Audiences saw a hilarious documentary-style “Thor” spoof from “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi imagining what Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was up to while his buddies were off battling each other in “Captain America: Civil War“. The film – which is not due for release in March 2019 – will be the first in the Marvel cinematic universe to centre on a female character.
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is arguably the most hard sell yet for Marvel, combining eastern mysticism with the general spectacle of a Hollywood blockbuster in a further attempt to widen and diversify their cinematic universe.
The casting of Tilda Swinton as a Celtic “Ancient One” caused an uproar among some fans, as the character is of Asian origin in the comics.
