Police clear protesters from St. Paul’s Summit Avenue
The protesters have been there regularly since the July 6 shooting of Philando Castile by a Falcon Heights police officer.
– At about 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, St. Paul police approached a group of protesters gathered in front of the Governor’s Residence on Summit Avenue and asked them to clear the street and return their demonstration to the sidewalk.
But police spokesman Steve Linders says that after about three hours, one protester did something that forced police to make arrests.
The street was reopened by 11 a.m. But several minutes later, traffic was blocked again as protesters walked out onto Summit.
Police had five demands for the protesters, who have remained peaceful in their encampment, according to Fox 9 News.
Authorities told protesters they needed to vacate the area and clear the scene of trash, signs and tents. “We don’t need to be treated like animals and criminals when we’re simply out here demanding justice for someone who didn’t deserve to be killed”.
Protesters stood outside the governor’s mansion in St. Paul, Minn. Dayton has suggested that race played a role in Castile’s death. But on Sunday, demonstrators went back into the street.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating Castile’s death.
