Memorial service for fallen Hayward sergeant at Oracle Arena

Thousands of people, including many police officers from throughout the Bay Area, are filing into Oracle Arena in Oakland this morning for the funeral service for Hayward police Sgt. Community members were invited and encouraged to pay their respect by turning out along the motorcade route to safely observe the procession from the sidewalk.

“So many people have asked, what can the community do?” It will head north to Foothill Boulevard, on to A Street westbound, then Interstate 880, ending at Oracle.

Lunger, a 15-year veteran of the Hayward Police Department, was shot near Myrtle and Lion streets at about 3:15 a.m. on July 22 after he and another officer stopped a Chevrolet Silverado truck that was allegedly driving erratically, police said.

Mark Anthony Estrada, 21, was later arrested.

Estrada has been charged with murder.

Lunger are advised of the following details regarding the viewing, services and travel concerns: PUBLIC VIEWING The public viewing was held at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward from 4 p.m.to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29.

At Oracle Arena, police officers from as far away as New York City and San Diego arrived two hours before the services, parking in an arena lot that was rapidly filling up. Scott Lunger will be live-streamed on this page.

“They are remarkable and handsome”, the police chief said of Ashton and Sara Lunger.

Law enforcement officers Thursday are escorting the Lunger’s body from a mortuary in Hayward to Oracle Arena in Oakland for the funeral service which is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office will handle Hayward police calls Thursday with assistance from the California Highway Patrol. The East Bay congressman paid tribute to Lunger on the House floor in Washington last Thursday.

“Scott was a guy who really appreciated tradition and honor”, she said.
