HBO to air two-part U2 tour special
The documentary will premiere on November 7, with the concert airing a week later on November 14.
HBO and U2 are collaborating on a double-barreled special about the veteran Irish rock band’s current world tour.
The week after that, HBO will air the band’s November 14 concert.
“U2 continues to take risks, which has made them one of the most consistently exciting forces in rock “n” roll”, said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo in a statement. The doc will look into all aspects of the tour, including interviews with both the band members themselves (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.), and the set design/production team (Willie Williams, Es Devlin, and others).
However, a documentary about a concert is a little disappointing if you can’t actually see the concert, so HBO will dedicate the second U2 special to an actual performance of the “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE” show from Paris’ Bercy Arena.
The documentary will be produced and directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) and produced by Shannon Dill, with U2 manager Guy Oseary serving as executive producer. It will look at the creation of the tour, which is meant to promote their latest album, Songs of Innocence.
U2’s ongoing Innocence + Experience Tour has featured unannounced guest appearances by everyone from Jimmy Fallon and the Roots to an Elvis impersonator and U2 cover band. It will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, who has worked with the band since 2001, including such collaborations as “Elevation: Live from Boston“, “U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle“, the “Beautiful Day” documentary, and “Vertigo in 2005: Live from Chicago“.
