Soldier killed in Lexington County has Upstate ties
Two soldiers who were trying to protect a woman at a SC bar were shot and killed.
At that point, Brooks says, Mills was approached by a crowd of people – a group he said was going to “lynch” him – and began opening fire. He’s been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the shooting. He was a staff sergeant, and is survived by a son and a daughter, the spokeswoman said.
Judge Jr.is originally from the Spartanburg area, according to 218th Leadership Regiment 1st Bn Engineers. Prins was shot three times in the left torso and neck.
Lexington deputies said Mills was involved in a fight with a woman outside the bar.
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Van McCarty said he served with Judge in Iraq in 2004 and called him a “soldier’s soldier”.
Justin Brooks, the owner of the Dreher Island Road bar, says Mills was chasing the woman with a gun and began beating her.
The restaurant said on its Facebook page that Prins and Judge were helping a woman.
One man is behind bars after two men died in a shooting at the Frayed Knot Bar & Grill on the north side of Lake Murray near the Lexington/Newberry County line early Sunday morning. “One was transported to the hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead there”, sheriff’s department spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick said. Prins leaves behind three small children. Mills said in a brief appearance that he did not understand the charges against him and did not have a lawyer. “He’d do it 100 times again”, adds his supervisor.
A judge denied bond for Joseph Mills on Monday afternoon.
“I’m very sorry about what happened”, Mills said, according to the State newspaper.
Mills tried to tell his story to the judge, who reminded him multiple times of his right to remain silent.
