Rea allows 3 homers, Padres lose to Cardinals
Randal Grichuk and Jedd Gyorko connected in consecutive at-bats in the seventh, and Stephen Piscotty homered into Big Mac Land in the third deck in left in the eighth.
After a 3-2 loss fueled by two homers and all three RBIs from Jedd Gyorko that gave the Cardinals a doubleheader sweep over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night, Clemens said in the future he would try to be “more of a businessman and not a fighter”.
“We knew what we were getting into”, Padres manager Andy Green said.
Gyorko, who was traded by the Padres in the offseason, is 13 for 21 against his old team this year with six home runs and 10 RBI. He started at third base both games of the doubleheader.
Louis Cardinals meet up in the second half of a double header on Wednesday night with Andrew Cashner going head to head with Jaime Garcia. He has homered against the Padres four straight games. “No harm, no foul in a walk”. After the first game he did his best to downplay it all, saying he felt “far from” Superman.
“I’ve said the same thing for three or four games”, Gyorko said. “I’m feeling good, feeling healthy and just going after guys”. Matt Holliday, Gyorko and Yadier Molina homered off Colin Rea (5-4). Matheny said with a smile “there’s a good chance” Gyorko will be in there. “I made a lot of mistakes and they took advantage of them”.
Padres: OF Jon Jay (right wrist) expects to get his cast off in about two weeks, and then a rehab will follow. San Diego has already sent some pieces out the door this season and they are expected to send quite a few more as the season moves along as they are in a rebuild mode now and could gain some pretty coveted assets in return.
PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 1 Jeremy Hellickson struck out eight in eight impressive innings, Tyler Goeddel hit a two-run homer and Philadelphia beat Miami. After fanning Clemens, Garcia converted Travis Jankowski’s hard bunt towards the mound into a force-out at the plate as his throw nipped Adam Rosales.
The game was a makeup of Tuesday night’s rainout. Paid attendance was 40,184.
The game was halted about 12 minutes while Martinez was tended to on the field with two outs and none on in the second for a nosebleed. The right-hander was even better once trainers stopped the bleeding with cotton balls and petroleum jelly. Wainwright owned a brutal 6.80 ERA through his first eight turns this season but has shaved more than 2 1/2 runs off that number over his last 11 turns. Diaz also singled and walked and has reached safely in a team-high 22 consecutive games.
San Diego (41-54) did pull within 3-2 with solo homers by Matt Kemp and Ryan Schimpf, extending its franchise record of games with a homer to 18 to tie the National League’s longest streak since the 2010 Cincinnati Reds.
The five relievers allowed one hit _ Schimpf’s homer _ over 3 1/3 innings.
