Rams release QB Nick Foles
There was a time when Foles looked like a potential star in the league. That effectively ended his Rams career.
“We have been in contact with Nick and his representation throughout the offseason and we feel that this is the best decision for all parties involved”, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement.
Foles has reportedly agreed to a reduction in the guaranteed money he was owed for 2016 for the opportunity to become a free agent and choose his next team, but he still got that $6 million bonus. The Rams suggested they were confident in Case Keenum as a quarterback, and Goff will likely be starting right away as the top pick in the draft. So the Rams also are on the hook for that, although they will recoup some or all of that figure if/when he ends up with another team.
Lately football hasn’t been too kind to Foles after a Pro Bowl worthy year in 2013. But he was never the same after throwing four interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, in a 24-10 loss at Green Bay in Game 5. After a November 15 loss to Chicago, Foles was benched in favor of Keenum, a former practice-squad quarterback.
Foles had an up-and-down (more down than up, truthfully) 2014 season with the Eagles and then was traded to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford and a second-round pick last offseason.
Last year, Foles started 11 of the Rams’ first 12 games, going 4-7 while posting a quarterback rating of 69.0.
The Los Angeles Rams released quarterback Nick Foles on Wednesday before veterans were due to report to training camp.
After an unhappy offseason that saw the addition of No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff in Los Angeles, Foles effectively lost a chance at starting because Goff is not expected to be on the Carson Wentz plan.
